Homegoing: Retelling the slavery story

Updated: Apr 20, 2021

Two half sister, Esi and Effia are born into different villages (Asante and Fante), each unaware of the other. Effia marries an Englishman and lives a comfortable life in the castle along the shore where there's intense slave trade. The other half sister Esi is captured in a raid on her village. She's kept in the dark dungeons in the Fanteland and later sold into slavery. Homegoing follows the lives of the half sisters and their descendants through 8 generations

I loved every bit of this book. I read this book slowly- taking in the moments bit by bit. Most books that tell slavery story do not give a detailed account from ancient African Kingdoms to the voyages to the West Indies and America. I believe that's what makes this book unique.

It told the story thoroughly - from every angle. No stone was left unturned, that is the African and African American voices and experiences were fully represented.

The book is rich in history, unique and authentic (I understand the hype)

The book explores themes such as the effects of slavery in Africa, the impact of colonization, social injustices & racism , gender roles, family, parenting among others.

I loved that Yaa Gyasi decided to build her characters and tell the story from different Point of Views (PoV). There was never a dull moment. Each character finished the story with a bit of suspense - an element the author used to draw the readers in. 14 different PoV seems quite ambitious but the author was able to pulled it off seamlessly. For a debut novel, this is an excellent work. I can't believe the author showed such brilliance in 300 pages - it felt like I had lived through decades.

Also I loved that the book discussed the changes in both Ghana and America simultaneously. The one thing I did not like about this book is that by the end of each chapter, I was so attached to the character, I did not want their story to end. I just wish the story was longer and the characters had more room in the novel.
