The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

The book follows the life of Hollywood actress Evelyn Hugo. Hugo is now ready to tell the truth about the glamorous and scandalous life in Hollywood show business in the 80s. She chooses an unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant to write the story of her rise to fame, marriage, love, and motherhood.

What the hell did I just read?

I came to the Evelyn Hugo party late.

Evelyn Hugo’s story is an unforgettable one – It will live with me for a long time.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is (obviously) about the seven marriages of Evelyn Hugo. I loved that Reid gave the readers a messy and flawed protagonist.

I love how Reid fully fleshed out Evelyn Hugo’s character in 385 pages. Impressive. It is interesting how each chapter of her marriage starts with a Hollywood article and then the author goes to speak of the true event that happened. Though the book centres on Evelyn Hugo, the author subtly grew Monique Grant’s character as well which goes to show the author’s ability to develop characters big or small.

I hated all but one of Hugo’s husbands: Harry Cameron. Hugo’s and Cameron’s friendship in the book gave me so much joy. The end broke me, and it was so unexpected.

The writing in the book and the language is intense, emotional, and thought-provoking. I highlighted some good quotes in the book that apply to life and living it. The book delves into themes such as LGBTQ, intimacy and sex, money, success and fame, love and friendship, motherhood, and parenting.

Trigger warning: domestic violence

This book is important – the character Evelyn Hugo is fierce, brave, and becomes wiser as the book progresses.

Read this. I highly recommend it.
