“His Only Wife: Would you marry a man you don't know?”

Updated: Apr 20, 2021

His Ony Wife follows the marriage of Afi, who lives in a small town in Ghana. Afi has been convinced to marry a man she does not know. With the little information provided by her mother and the man’s family, Afi hopes that she will distract the man from his relationship with a woman they regard as “inappropriate”. Afi soon learns that things are not what they told her. Afi must tooth and nail for her husband to stay and love her. But does she wins the man’s heart and love?

The first sentence of the book was enough to get me hooked

“Elikem married me in absentia; he did not come to our wedding”.

I breezed through this book in days – I must admit, it is a fast-paced book full of the family and marriage drama one would expect in a Ghanaian setting. The story felt like a church or neighbourhood gossip. This book is a page-turner. Once you pick it up, you won’t be able to put it down until you finish it. The ending is so unexpected – I did not see it coming.

The story is very simple and straightforward, narrated from Afi’s Point of View. I started this book with no expectations so I enjoyed it. I’ve learnt not to have high hopes.

I honestly feel like the story needed other Point of Views – Muna’s Side or Elikem Side. Multiple POVs would have made me appreciate some characters a little more.

My favourite character in the book is Evelyn. Girl was living the life and she was extremely real about it. Unapologetically Herself!

I like Afi’s character and I admired her growth and independence in the book. There were times that her actions and decisions frustrated me but I liked that she wanted more from life instead of sitting at home waiting for her husband.

Why the hell was Afi blamed for Eli’s mistakes in their marriage?

I was so irritated by this. It is so irrational to blame a wife for her husband’s poor decisions. I mean! Though I felt that some parts of the book were rushed,

Medie touched on some really important themes:

  • Women that are considered wife/marriage materials (family-approved)

  • Traditional Marriages giving way to unofficial polygamous marriages

  • Class differences and social status
