Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones

Dana and Chaurisse are teenage sisters, bound together by the life-changing secret of their father’s double life. The story revolves around James Witherspoon’s families – the public one and the secret one. Only one of them knows the truth. The sisters build a friendship, but the relationship is destined to explode when secrets are revealed, and illusions shattered. Silver Sparrow paints an unforgettable story about a man’s deception and complicated family secrets.

My father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist

Cheers to another complicated, drama-filled story with a ‘killer’ first sentence. I was hooked right from the first sentence. This is my second Tayari Jones novel, and I must admit, the author has a way of writing a beautiful and complex story with a touch of wisdom.

Silver Sparrow is narrated in 2 PoV’s – Dana and Chaurisse. Tayari Jones brilliantly told James Witherspoon’s story in the voices of his daughters. The first half of the story is told by Dana and the second half by Chaurisse.

Quite honestly, I was amazed by how the girl’s voices were able to narrate the stories of their mothers, their father, their uncle, and grandmother. This book is structured in a way that it tells the family history – such clever writing.

Another thing I love about this book is the character development. Though I didn’t like the end of the book, I loved the depth and space each sister had painting the bigger picture. Tayari Jones beautifully explored the lives of each sister fully. Each character in the book was acting out of desire and passion, I just couldn’t‎ take sides.

The writing and language are light, conversational, and it draws the reader into the complicated life of Dana and Chaurisse.

The themes discussed in this book include family, parenting, womanhood, and marriage.

The story is unforgettable, and I highly recommend this book.
