Love in Colour is a collection of short stories which focuses on the retelling of mythical tales from around the world. The collection provides diverse tales of romance and desire that already exist in so many communities and cultures.
After a false start in May, I finally visited Babalola’s Love in Colour in July. The first short story in the novel put me off when I initially picked it up in May. A friend suggested I skip that one and move on with the rest. Out of the 13 short stories I enjoyed 5. The description, humour, writing, romance of Black Love filled me with joy.
I must admit, I have mixed feelings about this book.
The cover of the book is gorgeous. The writing and some of the stories were relatable. It felt like a modern-day popular romantic comedy tale across cultures. I loved the writing and the humour.
I could tell the end of most of the stories from the beginning except ‘Nefertiti’. Babalola did a good job with that one. There are some stories that I think about a lot – Scheherazade, Yaa, Nefertiti, Naleli and Thisbe.
Another thing I loved about this book is the diverse female characters – a warrior, queen, an author, student among others. I just love the fact that Babalola gave me different kinds of women in love.
Another thing that caught my attention is how Love in Colour put female characters centre stage – in charge of their desire and happiness. Love is really a beautiful feeling and it’s clear that Babalola loves love and loves to share the love.
I think the reason why I did not love this book that much is that I am not familiar with the original mythical tales the author drew her inspiration from so, I couldn’t fully appreciate the retold tales. Reading the old tales was a real struggle. I had to skip pages to get through the book. I must confess, I did not read the last two stories. This is my first hyped book on Bookstagram I did not enjoy.
